The Department of Statistical Science has played a major role in the development of the subject ever since its foundation in 1911 as the Department of Applied Statistics (the first department of statistics in the world), with Karl Pearson as its head.

A variety of courses is on offer at an undergraduate level, with the opportunity to study statistics on its own or combined with a wide range of other disciplines. Further information can be found at our Information for prospective students pages.

There is a strong research programme within the department; a list of current staff research interests may be found on the department's main research page.

During term-time, weekly research seminars are held on Thursday afternoons; find details of the current programme here.

In addition Biostatistics seminars are held monthly on Wednesday afternoons; find details of the current programme here.

The Department also accommodates the office of the Biometrika Trust, which publishes the statistical journal Biometrika. Find information about Biometrika here.
